A candidate on “The Voice UK” flipped the chair of one of the celebrity judges, Sir Tom Jones, as he sang the heartfelt ballad “Bless the Broken Road.” With his own guitar, contestant Peter Donegan played the well-known country music hit, which was co-written in 1994 by Marcus Hummon, Bobby Boyd, and Jeff Hanna.
In his audition, Donegan demonstrated his wonderful, mellow voice and impressive range, all while projecting confidence.
The fact that Donegan was the son of Lonnie Donegan, one of Sir Tom Jones’s longest pals in the music business, didn’t take long to ascertain. Popular singer-songwriter Donegan senior is renowned for having had a significant impact on the 1960s British pop music scene.
Writing the classic song “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,” which became one of Tom Jones’s biggest singles, was one of Donegan senior’s finest accomplishments. Regretfully, Lonnie Donegan died in 2002.
“Are you familiar with the song your father composed for me? “Should we attempt it jointly?” Jones questioned the competitor.
Donegan nodded quickly. He remarked, “I’ll have to play it on the piano.”
The other judges and the audience were both in awe of the two as they performed an emotive duet of the beloved song. It was evident that both men held great significance for this unique event. “A truly special meeting with my late great friend Lonnie Donegan’s son – the fantastically brilliant Peter Donegan!” tweeted Sir Tom later. In the meantime, Peter shared his happiness over the unexpectedly meaningful connection on social media: He exclaimed, “I’m so proud to perform my dad’s song with Sir Tom Jones.” It was a really sentimental time for me, and I know my father would have been pleased.
